A leaking pond is stressful — especially with fish. This guide shows you how to find the leak and repair it for every liner type.

Finding the Leak

First, establish where the leak is:

  1. Stop the pump and watch the water level over 24 hours
  2. If the level stabilises, the leak is in the pipe or pump system — not the liner
  3. If the level keeps dropping, it's the liner
  4. Note exactly where the water level stabilises — the leak is at or just above this level
  5. Inspect the liner at that level carefully for punctures, tears or UV damage

Repairing EPDM Liners

EPDM is the most repairable pond liner. Use EPDM bonding tape or a butyl patch kit:

  1. Drain the pond below the leak area
  2. Clean and dry the area thoroughly
  3. Cut a patch of EPDM or butyl 100mm larger than the damage on all sides
  4. Apply EPDM bonding primer to both surfaces
  5. Apply the patch and press firmly — use a roller if available
  6. Allow 24 hours to cure before refilling

Repairing Butyl Liners

Very similar to EPDM repair. Butyl joining tape is the easiest option for small punctures. For larger damage, use a butyl patch with primer.

Repairing PVC Liners

Use a PVC patch kit (same material). Clean the area with acetone first. Apply patch with PVC adhesive. Allow 4 hours minimum before refilling.

Repairing Concrete Pond Leaks

Use our professional clear pond sealer for hairline cracks and porous concrete. For structural cracks, repair with hydraulic cement first, then apply sealer over the top.

Prevention is Better Than Repair

Most liner leaks are caused by: sharp objects beneath the liner (always use 200gsm underlay), UV degradation (use liner with exposed areas covered), or physical damage from garden tools or animals. A proper installation with underlay prevents the vast majority of leaks.
