Which EPDM Thickness Do You Need?

0.75mm EPDM — The Standard Choice

0.75mm EPDM is our standard rubber liner for garden, wildlife, ornamental and goldfish ponds under 1.2m deep. It is more flexible than 1.0mm and folds neatly into shelves and curves; lay it over 200gsm geotextile underlay.

1.0mm EPDM (1.02mm / 40 mil) — Heavy Duty

1.0mm EPDM is recommended for koi ponds, ponds 1.2m or deeper, large ponds, stony or root-filled ground, and ponds with bottom drains or pipe fittings. It is more puncture resistant, but heavier and stiffer to install.

How to Size Your EPDM Pond Liner

Use the formula: Liner length = Pond length + (2 × maximum depth) + 0.6m overlap. Example: A pond 4m long × 3m wide × 0.8m deep needs: length = 4 + 1.6 + 0.6 = 6.2m; width = 3 + 1.6 + 0.6 = 5.2m. We supply custom-cut EPDM to the nearest 0.5m, so you'd order 6.5m × 5.5m.

EPDM Pond Liner Installation — Key Points

1. Lay 200 g/m² geotextile underlay over the prepared subgrade before placing EPDM
2. Unfold the liner and allow 30 minutes to warm in the sun before fitting — warm EPDM is more pliable
3. Work in creases gradually from the deepest point outward — do not try to remove all creases before filling
4. Seam tape: apply to clean, dry surfaces above 5°C; allow 24 hours cure minimum before filling
5. Anchor edges in a 450–500mm deep trench; backfill with compacted clay
