Pond Liner Underlay 200gsm UK — Heavy Duty Geotextile | Essential Protection | All Liner Types

The single most important accessory for any pond liner installation — our 200gsm Heavy Duty Geotextile Pond Liner Underlay is the protective foundation that keeps your pond liner in perfect condition for decades. Professional pond builders consider underlay non-negotiable: a pond liner without underlay is a pond liner waiting to fail.

Our geotextile underlay is a heavy-duty 200gsm needle-punched polypropylene fabric — the same professional specification used in commercial reservoir lining, landscape drainage, and civil engineering projects. It acts as a cushion between the ground and your pond liner, absorbing the shock of stones, roots, and ground movement that would otherwise puncture or stress your investment over time.

200gsm Pond Underlay — Key Facts

  • Material: needle-punched, non-woven polypropylene geotextile
  • Weight: 200gsm (grams per square metre), approximately 2mm thick uncompressed

  • Sizes: 93 sizes, from 2m x 2m (4m²) up to 45m x 40m (1,800m²)

  • Use under: EPDM, butyl, PVC, HDPE and LDPE pond liners
  • Buying an HDPE liner? Our 40-year HDPE pond liner already includes underlay. Our 25-year HDPE pond liner does not, so add this underlay in the same size.

5 Reasons Underlay Is Essential

  • đŸ›Ąī¸ Stone Puncture Protection — Even carefully prepared ground contains sharp stones that can work upward through soil movement. Underlay provides a tough buffer preventing these from reaching your liner
  • 🌱 Root Penetration Barrier — Aquatic plant roots can penetrate most liner materials over time. 200gsm geotextile significantly reduces this risk
  • đŸŒĄī¸ Thermal Insulation — Provides a layer of insulation beneath the liner, helping maintain more stable water temperatures in winter
  • ⚡ Ground Movement Cushioning — Soils expand and contract with moisture changes and frost. Underlay absorbs this movement, preventing it from stressing the liner
  • ⏰ Extended Liner Life — Pond liners installed with geotextile underlay last significantly longer than those without. The underlay investment pays for itself many times over

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

  1. Excavate and clean — Dig your pond and remove all large stones, roots, glass, and sharp debris. The cleaner the substrate, the better
  2. Roll out the underlay — Starting from one end, roll the underlay fabric into the excavation and press flat against all surfaces
  3. Overlap at edges — Allow 30–40cm of underlay to extend beyond the pond edge in all directions, protecting the liner at its most vulnerable point
  4. Overlap joins — If multiple pieces are needed, overlap by at least 300mm. No adhesive needed — the liner weight holds all pieces in position
  5. Install liner on top — Your chosen pond liner is installed directly on top of the underlay. The two layers work together to provide optimal protection

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I really need underlay, or can I use sand instead?
A: Sand is a good supplement but not a replacement for geotextile underlay. Sand can be washed away by water movement during pond filling, leaving voids that create pressure points. Use both sand (50mm base layer) AND geotextile underlay for the best protection.

Q: How much underlay do I need?
A: Order the same dimensions as your pond liner. Add 30–40cm on each dimension for edge overlap — or simply order the next size up if you're between sizes.

Q: Can underlay be used for other applications?
A: Yes. Our 200gsm geotextile is widely used for weed suppression in garden borders, drainage separation layers in decking and paving projects, and erosion control on slopes.

Underlay vs Sand vs Old Carpet

Base layer How it performs under a pond liner
200gsm geotextile underlay (this product) Even cushion over the whole pond; does not wash away; inert and fish safe
Sand only Good as a 50mm base, but can wash away during filling and leave voids
Old carpet Degrades and compresses over time and may contain chemicals; not recommended

Best practice: a 50mm sand base, then this underlay, then the liner.

How Much Underlay Do I Need?

Underlay is sized exactly like the liner. Measure the pond's longest length, widest width and deepest point, then:

Length = pond length + (2 x maximum depth) + 0.6m
Width = pond width + (2 x maximum depth) + 0.6m

  • Garden pond 3m x 2m, 0.6m deep: 4.8m x 3.8m, so order 5m x 4m
  • Koi pond 6m x 4m, 1.5m deep: 9.6m x 7.6m, so order 10m x 8m

Between sizes? Choose the next size up, or use the pond liner size calculator.

Pond Underlay: Questions Answered

Does pond underlay go on top of or under the liner?

Geotextile pond underlay goes beneath the pond liner — between the excavated soil and the liner. The underlay protects the liner from below. Some installations also use a layer of underlay on top of the liner beneath heavy rocks, but the primary underlay layer is always beneath the liner.

What GSM pond underlay should I use?

200gsm non-woven geotextile is the standard recommendation for most UK garden ponds. Use 300gsm for rocky or flint-heavy soil, natural swimming ponds, or commercial installations. 100gsm is insufficient for effective protection and is not recommended.

Can I use old carpet instead of pond underlay?

Old carpet was historically used as pond underlay but is not recommended. Carpet degrades and compresses over time, can introduce biocides and synthetic fibres into pond water, and does not provide consistent protection. Purpose-made geotextile underlay is inexpensive, durable, and specifically designed for pond use.

What size underlay do I need for my pond?

Order underlay in the same size as your pond liner, so it covers the whole liner footprint. For a 3m x 2m pond that is 0.6m deep, the liner works out at 4.8m x 3.8m, so order the 5m x 4m underlay.

How do I join two pieces of pond underlay?

Overlap the pieces by at least 300mm. No adhesive is needed; the weight of the liner and water holds the pieces in position.

Is underlay included with your HDPE pond liners?

Our 40-year HDPE pond liner includes underlay. Our 25-year HDPE pond liner does not, so order this 200gsm underlay in the same size as the liner.

Can this underlay be used for other jobs?

Yes. 200gsm geotextile is also used for weed suppression in garden borders, as a separation layer under decking and paving, and for erosion control on slopes.

What is the largest size available?

The largest standard size is 45m x 40m (1,800m²). For larger or bespoke projects, contact our team for advice.
