LDPE (low-density polyethylene) pond liner is the most affordable synthetic pond liner available in the UK. What Is LDPE Pond Liner?
LDPE is a thermoplastic polyolefin with a highly branched molecular structure that gives it greater flexibility than HDPE. Its low density (0.910–0.925 g/cm³ vs 0.940+ for HDPE) makes it lighter and more pliable — important for handling on site. UV-stabilised LDPE pond liner includes carbon black or UV stabiliser additives that significantly extend outdoor service life beyond unstabilised polyethylene.

Garden Ponds on a Budget
LDPE 0.35mm is the entry-level choice for garden ponds where budget is the primary concern. Well-protected by planting and stone margins, LDPE delivers practical service life at minimal cost.
Agricultural Irrigation Ponds
LDPE is widely used for agricultural water storage and irrigation ponds. Its broad chemical resistance (pH 3–14, resistant to most agricultural chemicals) and low cost make it practical for large-area farm pond lining.
Temporary and Short-Term Ponds
For temporary ponds, construction site water storage, or any application where the pond will be removed within 10–15 years, LDPE offers the best value-for-money option.
LDPE Thickness Guide
- 0.30mm: Minimum specification, decorative features and shallow ponds only. Handle with care during installation.
- 0.35mm: Standard garden pond grade. Better puncture resistance and longer service life than 0.30mm.
- 0.50mm: Heavy duty agricultural grade. Suitable for farm reservoir applications and ponds up to 2m depth.
