A puncture from a stray root, a slip with a garden fork or a heron's claw does not mean a new liner. This pond liner repair kit gives you a piece of matching liner and a length of double-sided cold-glue tape, so you can seal a hole or tear and refill the pond the following day. It suits garden and wildlife pond owners as well as landscapers who maintain ponds for their customers. Choose the kit that matches your liner, butyl, EPDM or PVC, then the size that suits the damage.
Why it works
Cold-glue tape grips straight away
The tape is black, tacky on both faces and supplied on a wax backing paper. It sticks the moment it touches clean liner, then hardens off over the following 24 hours to form a watertight seal. Either face can be used, and it stays on its backing until you have cut it to size.
A patch of the same material
The kit includes a sheet of liner chosen to match your pond: butyl with butyl, EPDM with EPDM, PVC with PVC. A like-for-like patch flexes and moves with the liner around it as the pond fills, warms and cools. Small pinholes can be sealed with the tape alone. Larger holes and tears take tape plus a patch, which spreads the load over a wider area.
- Double-sided black cold-glue tape on a wax backing
- Matching liner patch in three sizes
- Tape alone for pinholes, tape plus patch for tears
- Hardens over 24 hours
Where it's used
Use it on garden and wildlife ponds, raised ponds, bog gardens, streams and the reservoir of a waterfall or rill. It is just as useful during construction: if a liner gets nicked while you are setting rocks or edging, you can fix it before the water goes in. For landscapers and maintenance contractors, a kit in the van is a sensible precaution.

Choosing the right option
Match the liner type first. Butyl and EPDM are both synthetic rubber: soft, stretchy and matt. PVC is a smoother plastic sheet that is often slightly shiny and creases more sharply. If you bought your liner from us, the type is on your order; otherwise check an offcut or the edge under your coping.
Then size the kit to the damage. Your patch should reach at least 5-10cm past the damage on every side. The small kit (A4 patch, 1m tape) covers one puncture or a short nick. The medium kit (50 x 50cm, 3m tape) suits a tear of up to about 30cm, or several small holes. The large kit (1 x 1m, 10m tape) is for long splits or several repairs. To fit a seam or join rather than a patch, see our butyl pond liner joining tape.
Installation, use & care
- Find the leak. Let the level fall until it stops; the leak is usually just above that line. Our guide how to find a leak in a pond liner explains more.
- Drain, clean and dry. Lower the water below the damage. Clean off algae and silt and let the area dry completely.
- Cut to size. Cut the patch at least 5-10cm bigger than the damage all round, with rounded corners so no edge can lift. Cut the tape to match on its backing.
- Apply. Press the tape onto the liner, peel off the backing, then lay the patch on top. Smooth it from the centre outwards to push out all the air.
- Cure. Leave 24 hours to harden before refilling.
FAQ
Can I repair the liner underwater?
No. You must drain the pond below the repair while you apply it, and the liner must be clean and dry. If you cannot drain the pond, a sealant made for underwater use, such as our fish-safe pond sealant, is the right product.
Can I use the tape without the patch?
Yes. For pinholes and minor damage, the cold-glue tape on its own can be pressed on and left to harden. Use the patch for anything bigger.
How long before I can refill?
Leave the repair for 24 hours to harden, then refill slowly and check the repair as the water rises.
