PVC Pond Liners UK — Affordable & Easy to Install

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pond liner offers the best value entry point for garden pond lining. Flexible, easy to handle, and widely available in standard sizes, PVC is a practical choice for budget-conscious pond builders and smaller water features. Our PVC pond liners carry 15–30 year guarantees depending on thickness and grade.

Who PVC Pond Liner Is Right For

  • Garden pond builders on a budget who want a decent-quality liner at low cost
  • Water features and small ponds where the liner will be well protected from UV by stone edging or planting
  • Temporary pond installations or ponds likely to be relocated or redesigned
  • Situations where the lowest upfront cost is more important than lifetime value

Where EPDM Is a Better Choice Than PVC

PVC has real limitations versus EPDM that are worth understanding before choosing:

  • UV degradation: PVC relies on plasticisers for flexibility. These migrate out over time when exposed to UV and heat — causing the liner to become brittle and crack at fold lines after 10–15 years. EPDM's UV resistance is intrinsic to its chemistry and does not degrade over time.
  • Cold weather performance: PVC becomes noticeably stiffer and more brittle below 5°C, increasing installation damage risk. EPDM remains flexible to -40°C.
  • Lifetime cost: A PVC liner at £1.40/m² that needs replacing after 12 years costs more over 25 years than an EPDM liner at £3.00/m² with a 25-year guarantee.

PVC Pond Liner Thickness Guide

0.30mm PVC — Budget Grade

Suitable for: small decorative features, temporary installations, low-risk applications with well-protected subgrade. Guarantee: typically 10–15 years.

0.50mm PVC — Standard Grade

Suitable for: medium garden ponds up to 1.5m depth, ponds with good UV protection at margins. Better puncture resistance and longer guarantee (20–30 years) than 0.30mm.

PVC Pond Liner Installation Tips

  • Install above 5°C — PVC becomes stiff and risks cracking in cold conditions
  • Use geotextile underlay (200 g/m² minimum) on all but the smoothest prepared subgrades
  • Overlap seams minimum 100mm and secure with PVC pond liner seam tape or solvent cement
  • Bury margins in anchor trench immediately — exposed PVC degrades faster than protected sections
  • Consider a stone or timber edge treatment to completely shade the liner margin from UV
