Koi ponds represent the most demanding application for any pond liner. Why Butyl Rubber Was Specified

The specification of butyl rubber for this project was deliberate and based on decades of UK koi keeping best practice. Butyl rubber has been the material of choice for serious koi keepers since the 1970s for very specific technical reasons:

  • Absolute chemical inertness: Butyl rubber leaches nothing into pond water. Unlike PVC liners which may release plasticisers at elevated pH, butyl is entirely stable across the pH range of 6.5–9.0 typical of koi ponds.
  • Resistance to UV and ozone: Koi ponds increasingly incorporate UV clarifiers and ozone treatment for water clarity. Butyl withstands both without degradation.

Filter System Integration

Filter integration with the liner was managed by the specialist koi pond contractor using purpose-designed butyl liner flanges and stainless steel clamping systems. Koi Stocking Timeline
