Project Overview
When Oxfordshire County Council approved funding for an outdoor learning habitat at a 320-pupil primary school in rural Oxfordshire, the school's headteacher and grounds committee faced a decision that would define the project for a generation: what type of wildlife pond to build, and how to build it safely and sustainably. The resulting project — a 4×3 metre wildlife pond with associated planting zones — has become a model for school pond installations across the UK.
School wildlife ponds present unique constraints that differ fundamentally from domestic or commercial pond projects. Child safety is paramount, the pond must survive decades of curriculum use with minimal maintenance, and the liner must be non-toxic to every creature that will live in or visit the pond — from water boatmen and great crested newts to visiting schools of Year 3 children with nets and identification sheets.
Project Funding & Partners
The project was funded through a combination of the Local Authority outdoor learning grant, a contribution from the school's PTFA, and a donated matching fund from a local business. The Wildlife Trust for Oxfordshire provided ecological consultancy at no cost, specifying plant species appropriate to the local chalk landscape. Total project budget: £4,200 including all materials, groundworks, and planting.
Safety Design Specification
Child safety requirements drove every design decision. In consultation with the school's health and safety officer and the Local Authority's outdoor learning guidance, the following safety features were incorporated:
- Maximum depth 600mm — the shallowest viable depth for a productive wildlife pond, below the 750mm threshold typically requiring additional fencing under local authority guidance
- Graduated entry shelf: A 300mm deep, 500mm wide marginal shelf running 75% of the pond perimeter, allowing children to observe from safe wading depth
- Gentle beach entry: One corner excavated as a gravel beach slope from ground level to 200mm depth, allowing amphibian and insect access and supervised classroom observation
- Rounded edge profile: No sharp corners in the excavation, all edges rounded with 100mm minimum radius
- Perimeter fencing: 900mm post-and-rail timber fence with hinged gate, secured with teacher-key padlock during unsupervised periods
- Emergency reach pole: Mounted on adjacent fence post, inspected termly

EPDM was chosen over alternatives for its combination of safety properties, flexibility for the complex marginal shelf profile, and long guarantee period appropriate to a public building asset. PVC was rejected due to potential plasticiser leaching concerns raised by the Wildlife Trust consultant. Butyl, while equally safe, was priced beyond the project budget for this application size.
Installation Process
Excavation
Excavation was completed by a local groundworks contractor using a 1.5-tonne mini-excavator, the only machine that could access the school grounds through a 1.8m gate. The marginal shelf was hand-excavated to ensure precise depth control. All spoil was retained on site and used to create a gentle berm on the north side of the pond, providing windbreak habitat and extending the planting zone.
Liner Installation
Installation was carried out on a dry October weekend by the groundworks contractor with assistance from six parent volunteers under professional supervision. The EPDM sheet (single piece, no joins) was warmed in morning sunlight before draping, allowing it to conform naturally to the shelf and beach contours without forced stretching. Pleats were neatly folded at corners. The liner was anchored in a perimeter concrete trench and disguised under edging stone and turf on three sides, with the beach entry corner finished with pea gravel laid directly on the liner.
Planting Guide
The planting scheme was developed with the Wildlife Trust to maximise ecological value while maintaining educational clarity. Plants were selected for identification ease, robust constitution, and value to target invertebrate species.
Submerged Plants (oxygen producers)
- Ceratophyllum demersum (Hornwort) — fast-growing, excellent oxygenation
- Myriophyllum spicatum (Spiked Water Milfoil) — native, invertebrate habitat
Marginal Plants (shelf zone, 0–300mm)
- Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold) — early spring flower, pollinator value
- Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag Iris) — structural, excellent for damselfly larvae
- Mentha aquatica (Water Mint) — aromatic, child-engaging sensory plant
- Veronica beccabunga (Brooklime) — native, slug-resistant
Emergent & Edge Plants
- Typha angustifolia (Lesser Reedmace) — narrower than common bulrush, appropriate scale
- Carex pendula (Pendulous Sedge) — overhanging habit, excellent frog habitat
Educational Outcomes
The pond was formally integrated into the school's curriculum from the Spring term following installation. Outcomes measured across the first academic year include:
- Science (KS1/KS2): All year groups completed at least one pond-dipping session linked to curriculum units on habitats, food chains, and life cycles
- First wildlife records: Common frog spawn observed in February — just five months post-installation — exceeding all ecological expectations
- Invertebrate survey: By June 2024, the pond supported 23 identified invertebrate species including pond skater, great diving beetle, water boatman, freshwater shrimp, and three species of damselfly larva
- Bird records: Grey heron visited in March; kingfisher observed twice in April
- Curriculum links: Teachers reported the pond enabled concrete, hands-on delivery of topics previously taught only from textbooks
- Pupil wellbeing: Pastoral team reported measurable improvement in attention and engagement among Year 5 pupils following weekly pond observation sessions
Maintenance Programme
The pond requires approximately three hours of maintenance per term — well within the capacity of the school's grounds team. Autumn leaf removal (critical to prevent anaerobic decomposition), spring margin management, and periodic thinning of submerged oxygenators constitute the entire workload. The EPDM liner requires no maintenance whatsoever, and its single-piece construction eliminates any seam failure risk over the pond's 20-year guarantee period.
This project demonstrates that a high-quality wildlife pond with professional liner specification is achievable within a modest community budget and delivers educational, ecological, and wellbeing benefits that far outweigh the initial investment.
