When to Choose EPDM
- Koi ponds of any size
- Large ponds over 20m²
- Commercial and professional installations
- Ponds with significant liner exposed at the waterline (superior UV resistance)
- Ponds in areas with temperature extremes
- When you want the longest possible guarantee (25 years)
When to Choose Butyl
- Naturalistic and wildlife ponds with organic, irregular shapes
- Ponds with complex shelf arrangements and steep sides
- Smaller residential garden ponds (under 20m²)
- When ultimate flexibility during installation is the priority
- Stream and waterfall features with tight bends
Important Note on EPDM Grades
Not all EPDM is equal. Standard EPDM used in roofing contains carbon black and is toxic to fish. Always ensure you're purchasing EPDM-45 fish-safe grade — which is what we supply. Our EPDM is 1.02mm thick (professional spec) — most UK retailers sell 0.75mm EPDM which is 35% thinner and carries a shorter guarantee.
The Verdict
For most serious pond installations in the UK, EPDM 1.02mm is the professional's choice. For naturalistic and wildlife ponds where the liner must conform to a complex, organic shape, butyl is unmatched. You cannot go wrong with either — both will outlast lesser liner materials by decades.
