Ordering a pond liner online is straightforward — but receiving, checking, and storing a large, heavy roll of liner requires some preparation. This guide explains exactly what to expect from order to installation-ready, so nothing catches you by surprise on delivery day.

How Pond Liners Are Shipped

Pond liners are shipped differently depending on their size and weight. Understanding the logistics helps you prepare your site and receiving arrangements appropriately.

Small Liners (up to approximately 30kg)

Liners with a total weight under 30kg — typically standard-size rolls up to around 4m × 3m in EPDM or 6m × 4m in PVC — are despatched via standard pallet courier services. These are shipped on a small pallet or well-secured roll, delivered by a single driver with a tail-lift vehicle. Next-day and express delivery services are typically available for this weight class. The courier will deliver to your kerbside or driveway — they are not obliged to carry items to your garden, pond site, or beyond the front gate.

Medium Liners (30–80kg)

Medium-weight liners — most standard EPDM sheets for garden ponds in the 5m–8m range — are despatched on Euro pallets via pallet network couriers (such as Palletline, Palletways, or equivalent). The delivery vehicle will typically be an 18-tonne curtainsider or flatbed with a tail-lift. The driver is contracted for kerbside delivery only. You will need to be available to receive the delivery, and you should ensure there is clear vehicle access to within a reasonable distance of your property entrance. Pallet deliveries require a signature.

Large & Bespoke Liners (over 80kg)

Large pond liners — particularly heavy-duty EPDM 1.0mm sheets for natural swimming ponds, large koi installations, or custom factory-welded sheets — can weigh 150–300kg or more. These are despatched on a full Euro pallet, sometimes with a securing frame, via specialist heavy freight services. Delivery is always by pre-booked appointment with a 2-hour delivery window. The vehicle will be large — plan for artic or 7.5-tonne access. A tail-lift and pallet pump truck are standard, but the driver cannot carry the liner beyond the vehicle tailgate without assistance. You will need 4–6 people or a forklift to move a liner of this weight from kerbside to site.

Checking Your Delivery

When your pond liner arrives, carry out these checks before signing the delivery note or allowing the driver to leave. Damages or shortages not noted at delivery are significantly harder to claim for after the driver has gone.

External Packaging Check

Inspect the outer wrapping or pallet wrap for any damage — cuts, tears, or compression damage from the transit journey
Check for any evidence of moisture penetration into the packaging (important for liners shipped without full outer cartons)
Verify the pallet or package label matches your order: product code, dimensions, and quantity
If packaging is significantly damaged, mark the delivery note as "Received damaged — contents to be inspected" before signing

Liner Inspection

Partially unroll the liner to inspect the surface for any visible cuts, abrasions, or holes in the material
Check any factory-welded seams for continuity — seams should be consistently bonded with no gaps or lifted edges
Verify the liner dimensions match your order specification (a tape measure along unrolled length and width)
Check that underlay or accessory items listed on your order are all present

If You Find Damage

Photograph everything immediately — the packaging, the damaged liner area, the delivery label, and the overall scene. Do not cut or trim any damaged section. Contact the supplier the same day with your photographs and order reference. Claims submitted within 24 hours of delivery with photographic evidence are almost always resolved quickly and in the customer's favour. Claims submitted days later without photographic evidence are much harder to resolve.

Vehicle Access: Planning Ahead

Pallet deliveries require a vehicle with adequate access. Before your delivery date, check:

Road access: Is the road to your property suitable for a large vehicle? Narrow lanes, low bridges, weight restrictions, and sharp bends can all prevent delivery lorries from reaching your address
Gate and entrance width: A standard pallet is 1.2m wide. Your gate or entrance needs to be at least 1.4m clear for pallet pump truck access
Surface: Pallet pump trucks require a reasonably level, hard surface to operate. Soft ground, grass, or steep slopes may prevent the driver from moving the pallet from the vehicle
Turning space: Large vehicles need turning space — a dead-end driveway or narrow yard may require the driver to reverse in from the road, which should be discussed when booking the delivery

If vehicle access is restricted, inform the supplier when ordering. Alternative delivery arrangements — smaller vehicle, HIAB crane-offload, or delivery to a local depot for collection — can usually be arranged. Attempting to have a large liner delivered to a restricted access address without prior arrangement often results in a failed delivery, redelivery charges, and delay to your project.

Unboxing Large Pond Liners

Moving and unrolling a large, heavy pond liner requires planning and adequate manpower. Never attempt to drag a liner roll across rough ground — the packaging protects the liner and can be torn, potentially dragging the liner across abrasive surfaces.

Position the liner roll as close to the pond excavation as possible before unrolling — each metre closer saves significant effort
Remove outer packaging carefully using scissors or a knife, cutting only the packaging — never the liner material
For rolls over 50kg, use a scaffolding bar or similar through the core of the roll as a handling bar, with two people on each end
Unroll across clean, smooth ground — a tarpaulin laid on the ground near the pond provides a clean, abrasion-free unrolling surface
EPDM and butyl benefit from warming in sunlight for 1–2 hours before installation — a warmed liner drapes more easily and conforms better to pond contours

Storing Your Liner Before Installation

If your pond liner arrives before the excavation is complete, correct storage ensures the liner remains in perfect condition until you are ready to install:

Keep the liner in its original packaging until installation day
Store in a clean, dry location out of direct sunlight — a garage, outbuilding, or under a waterproof cover is ideal
Store flat or on the roll — do not stand the roll on its end, as this can deform the inner layers
Keep away from sharp objects, chemicals (particularly solvents), and petroleum products
EPDM and butyl can be stored indefinitely without degradation in appropriate conditions — PVC should ideally be installed within 12 months of manufacture to minimise any pre-installation plasticiser migration
Record your delivery date and storage location in case this information is needed for a warranty claim
