⚡ Quick Answer
To install a pond liner: excavate to shape, lay 200gsm geotextile underlay, drape liner centrally, fill slowly with water while smoothing folds, trim leaving 30-50cm overlap, then secure edges under coping stones. Allow 24-48 hours before adding fish. EPDM-45 (1.02mm) is the recommended liner for UK ponds as it stretches up to 300%. View our pond liners →

How to Install a Pond Liner – Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Building a garden pond is one of the most rewarding landscaping projects you can undertake. A well-installed liner will last decades and provide the foundation for a thriving aquatic ecosystem. This step-by-step guide takes you from planning and excavation through to first fill — covering everything a UK gardener needs to know.
What You'll Need
- Pond liner (correctly sized for your pond — see our size calculator)
- 200gsm geotextile underlay
- Spade and mini-excavator (for large ponds)
- Spirit level and long plank
- Sand (optional — for base levelling)
- Scissors or sharp knife
- Hosepipe and water supply
- Coping stones or edging material
Step 1: Plan Your Pond Shape and Position
Mark out your pond shape using a hosepipe or spray paint. Consider:
- Sunlight — most aquatic plants need 4–6 hours of sunlight daily
- Trees — avoid overhanging trees (leaf fall, roots)
- Visibility — position where you can enjoy it from the house
- Level ground — sloped sites require more preparation
- Services — check for underground cables and pipes before digging
Step 2: Calculate Your Liner Size
Use our formula:
- Length = Pond Length + (2 × Depth) + 0.5m
- Width = Pond Width + (2 × Depth) + 0.5m
For a 3m × 2m pond, 0.8m deep: you need a liner of at least 5.1m × 4.1m. Choose 6m × 5m for comfortable installation.
Step 3: Excavate
- Dig your pond to the planned depth, creating shelves at 20–25cm depth for marginal plants
- Create sloped sides at approximately 20° from vertical — this makes liner installation easier and is safer for wildlife
- Check levels using your spirit level and plank across the top of the excavation
- The pond rim should be perfectly level all around — this prevents unsightly liner exposure on one side
- Remove all stones, sharp objects, and protruding roots from the excavation walls and base
Step 4: Prepare the Base
- If your soil is clay-heavy, compact the base firmly
- For sandy or very stony soil, add a 3–5cm layer of damp sand to the base and shelves
- Re-check levels after any base preparation
Step 5: Lay the Underlay
- Drape the geotextile underlay across the entire excavation
- Press it gently into all corners, shelves, and contours
- Overlap any joins by at least 30cm
- Allow underlay to extend over the edges of the excavation — it can be trimmed later
Step 6: Position the Liner
- On a warm, sunny day — a warm liner is more flexible and easier to handle
- Unfold the liner across the pond, centring it as evenly as possible
- Loosely drape it into the excavation — do NOT stretch it tight
- At shelves and corners, fold the liner into neat pleats
- Temporarily weight the edges with stones (not sharp ones) to keep it in position
Step 7: Begin Filling
- Place the hosepipe in the deepest part of the pond
- Fill slowly — the weight of the water will gradually press the liner into the contours
- As the water rises, periodically smooth out large folds and creases by hand
- Remove the temporary stones as each section fills and the liner settles naturally
Step 8: Trim and Secure the Edges
- When the pond is full, trim the excess liner leaving 30–40cm overlap
- Fold the liner neatly over the excavation edge
- Secure with coping stones, turf, or pond edging — the weight holds the liner in place
- Avoid folding the liner at sharp 90° angles at the rim, which can stress the material
Step 9: Water Preparation
- For PVC liners: let the pond stand filled for 48–72 hours before introducing fish
- For HDPE/LDPE: these are inert and safe immediately, but waiting 24 hours is good practice
- Treat with a dechlorinator if using tap water and planning to add fish
- Allow the pond to establish biologically before stocking fish — ideally 2–4 weeks
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Skipping the underlay — the most common cause of premature liner failure
- ❌ Stretching the liner tight before filling — always allow slack
- ❌ Leaving the rim unlevel — creates visible liner on one side
- ❌ Ordering a liner that's too small — always size up
- ❌ Installing on a cold day — cold makes liners stiff and hard to mould
- ❌ Sharp folds at the pond rim — can weaken the liner material over time
