EPDM offers a 25-year lifespan versus 10–15 years for PVC, superior UV resistance, much better cold-weather performance, genuine fish safety, and comparable or lower long-term cost when replacement is factored in. PVC is only worth considering for very small, temporary decorative features with no fish.
The State of the Market in 2025
PVC was the dominant garden pond liner for much of the 1990s and 2000s, primarily due to lower upfront cost and wide availability in garden centres. Since then, two things have changed: EPDM prices have fallen significantly as production has scaled, and the understanding of PVC's limitations has become mainstream in the gardening community.
