How to Choose a Pond Liner UK – 7 Questions to Ask Before You Buy

⚡ Quick Answer

Before buying a UK pond liner ask: What material (EPDM, butyl, HDPE, or PVC)? What thickness? Is it EPDM-45 certified fish-safe? Does it carry a 25-year guarantee? What size do I need (Length + 2 times depth + 60cm per side)? Is underlay included? EPDM-45 (1.02mm) answers yes to all these criteria for most UK garden ponds. View our pond liners →

Choosing a pond liner is one of the most important decisions in any pond build. Get it wrong and you face an expensive, disruptive rebuild in 10 years. Get it right and your liner will outlast the garden. Here are the 7 questions every buyer should answer first.

1. What type of pond are you building?

Koi pond → EPDM 1.02mm fish-safe EPDM-45 only. No exceptions. Koi are sensitive and the liner must be certified non-toxic.

Wildlife pond → Butyl 0.75mm. Its flexibility is perfect for the organic shapes wildlife ponds need.

Small garden pond → PVC 0.5mm HD or HDPE. Good value, easy to handle, long guarantees.

2. What size liner do you need?

Formula: Liner length = pond length + (2 × max depth) + 0.6m. Apply to both dimensions. Always round up.

3. Is the liner certified fish safe?

Critical for any pond with fish. EPDM must be EPDM-45 grade (not standard roofing EPDM which contains carbon black — toxic to fish). Our EPDM is always EPDM-45 certified.

4. What thickness do you need?

Don't be misled by cheap 0.75mm EPDM. Professional pond builders specify 1.02mm for anything serious. It's 35% more material for proportionally better performance and a longer guarantee.

5. What is the actual guarantee?

Our guarantees: EPDM 25yr | Butyl 20yr | HDPE 25-40yr | PVC 0.5mm 30yr | PVC 0.3mm 15yr. In practice, correctly installed liners routinely outlast their guarantees — but it's a useful quality indicator.

6. Do you need underlay?

Yes. Always. Every pond, every liner type. 200gsm geotextile underlay adds minimal cost and protects your liner from punctures that void the guarantee. It's the most important accessory you can buy.

7. Is free delivery included?

Always check. Large liners are heavy — delivery charges can add £30-£80. All our pond liners include free UK mainland delivery.
