Pond Ammonia Filter Media Twin Pack provides double the protection against toxic ammonia and nitrite in your koi pond or large ornamental pond. Each pack contains two large natural zeolite mineral pouches, giving you rotating coverage — recharge one while the other remains active. Rechargeable with simple salt water treatment for long-term, economical use.
Designed for Large Koi Ponds
Large koi ponds with heavy fish loads demand serious ammonia management. A single small pouch is simply not adequate for a pond stocked with large koi. This twin pack provides the volume of zeolite media needed to make a meaningful difference in a large pond, and the two-pouch format enables a continuous rotation system — one pouch active in the filter while the other recharges in a salt solution.
Why Rotate Two Pouches?
Zeolite becomes saturated and loses effectiveness after several weeks of use. Recharging requires a 24-hour salt water soak and a rinse, during which your pond has no zeolite protection. With a twin pack, you can always maintain coverage: Pouch A goes into the filter while Pouch B recharges, and you swap them every 3–4 weeks. This continuous rotation ensures your pond always has active ammonia-removing media in place.

The Zeolite Rotation System
Follow this simple 4-week rotation for continuous pond protection:
- Week 1–3: Pouch A active in filter, Pouch B stored clean
- Week 4: Remove Pouch A, place Pouch B in filter. Soak Pouch A in strong salt solution (25g salt/litre) for 24 hours
- After recharge: Rinse Pouch A thoroughly, store clean. Pouch B now active
- Repeat: Alternate pouches monthly for continuous coverage
When to Use Additional Pouches
The 4-Pack is recommended when you have a multi-chamber filter system, are running multiple ponds, have a very large or heavily stocked koi pond (above 20,000 litres), or want to maintain a larger reserve of media. It offers the best value per pouch and ensures you always have emergency replacement media available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many times can zeolite pouches be recharged?
High-quality zeolite can typically be recharged 3–5 times before its effectiveness begins to decline significantly. After each recharge cycle, test your water with an ammonia test kit — if ammonia begins rising despite the pouch being present, it's time to replace it rather than recharge it again.
What concentration of salt should I use for recharging?
Use non-iodised salt at approximately 25g per litre of water. Soak the pouch for a full 24 hours, then rinse very thoroughly with fresh water to remove all salt before returning to the pond. Never return a salt-soaked pouch to the pond without thorough rinsing.
Do these pouches work in cold water during winter?
Zeolite's ion exchange process is less efficient at cold temperatures, but it still provides useful ammonia absorption even in winter. During very cold periods when fish metabolism slows and ammonia production drops, the reduction in efficiency is often offset by the lower ammonia load from fish in winter.
Can I use these alongside other filter media?
Yes — these pouches are complementary to your existing biological, mechanical, and chemical filter media. They do not replace a biological filter but provide an important additional layer of ammonia protection, particularly during filter maturation, after medication, or during high fish density periods.
How do I know when the zeolite has been exhausted?
The most reliable indicator is your water test results. If ammonia begins rising above 0.25mg/L despite the pouches being in place and recently recharged, the zeolite capacity has been exhausted. Test weekly with a quality ammonia test kit to monitor effectiveness.
