Pond ammonia remover zeolite gives you fast, effective removal of toxic ammonia from pond water using natural zeolite mineral media. The granules go into your pond filter, in a mesh media bag or loose in a media tray, and take ammonia out of the water as it flows through, helping to protect koi and goldfish from ammonia spikes and keep the pond healthy while your biological filter catches up. It is sold by weight in six sizes, from a 200g top-up to a 10kg bulk bag, so you can buy exactly the amount your filter chamber holds. Zeolite can be recharged for repeat use.
The Danger of Ammonia in Your Pond
Ammonia is the number one silent killer in garden ponds. It is produced continuously by fish waste, uneaten food and decaying plant matter. Even at low concentrations, ammonia damages fish gills, suppresses immunity and causes chronic stress. In newly set up ponds, during overstocking, or after any disruption to your filter bacteria, ammonia can rise to dangerous levels within hours.
Why It Works
Ion exchange physically removes ammonia
Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral with a highly porous, negatively charged crystal structure. That structure attracts and holds positively charged ammonium ions through ion exchange, physically removing ammonia from the water rather than just converting it. The ammonia stays locked in the stone until you recharge or replace it.
Finely granulated for a larger working surface
This zeolite is crushed into fine angular granules. Smaller pieces expose more surface to the water than large lumps, so the media reduces ammonia levels more quickly. The trade-off is that fine granules must be contained: use a media bag or a tray with small openings so they cannot wash into your pump.
It supports, not replaces, your biological filter
Zeolite does not harm the nitrifying bacteria in your filter. It takes some of the ammonia load off them, which matters most while a new filter is maturing.
- Removes ammonia, the most dangerous pond pollutant
- Fits most pond filters, in a media bag or media tray
- Rechargeable in salt water for repeat use
- Natural zeolite mineral, safe for koi, goldfish and all pond fish
- Ideal for new ponds during filter maturation (new pond syndrome)
Where It's Used
Use it in box filters, gravity multi-chamber filters, filter trays under waterfalls and skimmer baskets, and in pond-side quarantine or hospital tanks. Koi keepers often keep a bag on the shelf for emergencies.

Choosing the Right Weight
A dose rate is not published for this line, so size your order by the space you have. Fill a media bag or tray to the depth your filter chamber allows, leaving room for water to flow through and around it. As a rough guide, 200g and 600g suit aquariums, small patio ponds and compact filters; 1kg and 2kg fill a media bag in a typical garden-pond box filter; 5kg suits larger box and multi-chamber filters or two bags used in rotation; and 10kg is the economical choice for koi ponds, several filters or keeping a recharge stock. To rotate media, buy enough for two loads so one can recharge while the other works.
How to Use and Care for It
Rinse the zeolite before use to remove dust. Place it in a mesh media bag in your filter's media chamber, in the skimmer basket, or in a media tray where water flows through it; for pond filters, a fine-mesh drawstring filter bag holds the granules best. Replace or recharge every 4–8 weeks depending on stocking and water quality. To recharge, rinse the bag and soak it in a strong salt solution (25g salt per litre of water) for 24 hours, then rinse thoroughly with fresh water before returning it to the filter.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I change the zeolite?
Typically every 4–8 weeks under normal stocking. In heavily stocked ponds or during summer you may need to recharge or replace it more often. Test weekly; if ammonia rises above 0.25mg/L, recharge or replace it.
Can I use this in a salted pond?
No. Zeolite releases ammonia back into the water in the presence of salt, which is why salt is used for recharging. Do not use it in ponds treated with pond salt above 1g/L.
Does zeolite remove nitrite?
No. Zeolite works on ammonia. Nitrite is handled by your biological filter, so keep that healthy and test for nitrite separately.
Can I use zeolite alongside my existing filter media?
Yes. Zeolite works well alongside biological and mechanical media. It is not a replacement for a proper filter, but an important supplement during cycling, emergencies and periods of high stocking.
