Every pump-fed pond needs a dependable run of hose between the pump, the filter and any UV clarifier, and the diameter of that hose decides how much of your pump's flow actually arrives. This black flexible pond hose is sold in seven internal diameters from 12mm to 50mm, by the metre or as 5m and 30m lengths, so you can match the hosetails on your equipment and buy only what the run needs. It suits garden ponds, wildlife ponds, koi ponds and water features, and it is the hose our pond planner points you to when it recommends a size.
Why it works
Spiral-ribbed wall that bends without collapsing
The hose has a corrugated, spiral-ribbed PVC wall. The ribs let it follow the curve of a pond edge or drop over a rockery without needing elbows, while helping it hold its round shape on bends so the flow is not pinched. Fewer rigid fittings means fewer joints to leak.
Smooth bore for steady flow
The line is published with a smooth bore, which keeps friction inside the hose low. That matters most on longer runs and when a filter sits above water level, because every bit of drag reduces the litres per hour reaching the filter.
Black PVC that blends into planting
Black disappears against soil, liner and marginal planting, so exposed sections are far less noticeable than clear or coloured hose. The line is published as resistant to kinking and splitting.
- Seven internal diameters: 12, 20, 25, 32, 38, 40 and 50mm
- Sold per metre (as one continuous length) or as 5m and 30m lengths
- Flexible spiral-ribbed wall, smooth bore, black finish
Where it's used
The usual job is linking a submersible pond pump to a gravity or pressurised filter, then on to a UV clarifier and back to the pond via a return or waterfall. It is equally useful for feeding fountains, streams and cascades, for running water from a filter to a header pool. Larger diameters suit koi ponds and high-flow waterfalls; the smaller sizes suit patio features and small fountain pumps.

Choosing the right option
Choose the diameter from your pump's maximum flow rate, shown in litres per hour (L/h) on the pump or its box. These are the same thresholds our pond planner uses:
- Up to 2,500 L/h: 20mm (3/4 inch, often listed as 19mm)
- Up to 5,000 L/h: 25mm (1 inch)
- Up to 8,000 L/h: 32mm (1 1/4 inch)
- Up to 12,000 L/h: 38mm or 40mm (1 1/2 inch)
- Above 12,000 L/h: 50mm (2 inch)
If you are between sizes, go up. Oversized hose is fine: it carries the flow with less friction and the pump works more easily. Undersized hose chokes the flow, so the filter and UV receive less water than the pump is rated for. The 12mm size is for small fountain and feature pumps. Then check the hosetails on your pump, filter and UV unit; most have stepped tails you can trim to the largest size that fits. For length, measure the actual route, add a little for bends, and use per-metre hose for odd lengths.
Installation, use & care
Cut the hose square with a sharp knife or hose cutter. Push it fully over the hosetail and secure every joint with a stainless steel hose clip. If the hose is stiff on a cold day, dip the end in warm water for a minute to soften it before fitting. Keep runs short and direct and avoid tight kinks. Check clips each spring and flush the hose when you clean the filter.
FAQ
Can I use a bigger hose than my pump outlet?
Yes. A larger diameter reduces friction and usually improves the flow that reaches the filter. Use a stepped hosetail or a reducing connector to make the joint, and secure it with a clip.
How does the per-metre option work?
Add the number of metres you need as the quantity. For example, 6 metres means a quantity of 6, and it is supplied as one continuous length rather than separate 1m pieces, up to a single length of 30m on the 12mm to 40mm sizes.
Are hose clips included?
No. The hose is supplied on its own, so order a stainless steel clip for every joint.
Which size for a 3/4 inch or 1 1/2 inch hosetail?
A 3/4 inch tail takes the 20mm hose. For a 1 1/2 inch tail, use 38mm or 40mm; check which your tail is marked for and choose that size.
Ordering & delivery
Choose the diameter and the length option, then add the quantity: metres for the per-metre option, or the number of 5m or 30m lengths. Delivery charges and estimated dispatch times are shown at checkout before you pay. Unsure which size? Send us your pump's flow rate and we will confirm it.
