Cold water pond bacteria is a specially formulated beneficial bacteria treatment that continues working when pond temperatures fall below 10°C — even down to 4°C. It keeps your pond filter biologically active through winter, preventing the toxic ammonia spikes that standard summer bacteria treatments cannot handle in cold UK conditions.

Why Standard Pond Bacteria Fail in Winter

Most pond bacteria products on the market contain mesophilic bacteria strains — organisms that thrive between 15°C and 35°C. When water temperatures drop below 10°C (which happens throughout the UK from October to March), these bacteria become dormant or die off, leaving your pond's nitrogen cycle without biological support. The result is rising ammonia and nitrite levels, which stress or kill fish.

Cold Water Bacteria: Engineered for British Winters

Our cold water pond bacteria formula contains a blend of psychrophilic (cold-loving) bacterial strains — organisms naturally adapted to function at low temperatures. These continue breaking down ammonia, fish waste, and organic debris even when your pond thermometer reads just 4°C, keeping your fish safe and your filter alive through the coldest months.

The blend is highly concentrated at 10 billion CFU per gram. Its nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate, while other strains digest the excess nutrients and organic matter that cause cloudy water, odour and algae growth.

Monthly Dose Guide

Pond volume Monthly dose
Up to 1,000 litres (220 gallons) 100g
Up to 2,000 litres (440 gallons) 200g
Up to 5,000 litres (1,100 gallons) 300g
Up to 10,000 litres (2,200 gallons) 350g
Up to 20,000 litres (4,400 gallons) 400g
Up to 50,000 litres (11,000 gallons) 500g

Lakes: 1–2kg per acre each month or every other month, depending on water quality. Higher doses produce faster results.

Choosing the Right Size

A full October-to-March course is six monthly doses, so multiply your monthly dose by six. A 2,000 litre garden pond needs 200g a month, so the 500g pouch covers two to three months and the 1kg pouch the whole winter. A 10,000–20,000 litre koi pond needs 350–400g a month, or about 2.1–2.4kg for the season, which makes the 5kg tub the better buy. The 2 x 5kg twin pack suits several ponds or lakes dosed by the acre.

How to Apply

  1. Measure the powder for your pond volume using the dose guide above.
  2. Mix it with pond water, then apply directly to your pond near the filter outlet or return flow for even distribution, or add it to the filter.
  3. Switch off any UV clarifier for at least 24 hours after dosing — UV kills bacteria, including the ones you have just added.
  4. Treat monthly throughout autumn and winter (October–March).
  5. For new or heavily loaded ponds, a higher dose produces faster results.
  6. Store in a cool, dark location away from direct sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from regular pond bacteria?

Standard pond bacteria products use mesophilic strains that become dormant below 10°C. This product uses cold-adapted psychrophilic strains that remain active throughout British winters, maintaining your nitrogen cycle when standard products fail.

Should I keep my filter running in winter?

Yes — for koi ponds especially. Keep your filter running year-round (you may reduce flow slightly in very cold weather). This product will keep your filter biologically active even when the water is as cold as 4°C.

Can I use this alongside other pond treatments?

Yes. Cold water pond bacteria is compatible with most pond treatments. However, avoid dosing immediately after using algaecides or other antibacterial treatments as these may affect live bacteria.

How much do I need for my pond size?

From 100g a month for ponds up to 1,000 litres to 500g a month for ponds up to 50,000 litres — see the dose guide above.

When should I start using cold water bacteria?

Begin your first dose when pond temperatures consistently drop below 12°C — typically September or October across the UK. Don't wait for the temperature to crash before starting treatment. Once the water is back above 12°C in spring, switch to our standard beneficial bacteria powder.
