Complete Pond Liner Kit UK — Butyl 0.75mm + Geotextile Underlay | Premium Bundle
Our Complete Pond Liner Kit pairs a 0.75mm butyl rubber pond liner with a matching geotextile underlay, so the liner and its protective cushion layer arrive together. Professional pond builders consider underlay non-negotiable: a pond liner without underlay is a pond liner waiting to fail.
Butyl Pond Liner Kit: Key Facts
- Liner: Butyl rubber, 0.75mm
- Underlay: geotextile underlay, supplied with the liner
- Sizes: 6 sizes, from 3m x 3m to 8m x 6m
- Best for: Garden, koi and wildlife ponds, as a complete liner and underlay kit
- Sold by: PondLinersco.co.uk (Express Matting Services Ltd, Burnley, Lancashire, UK)
Our geotextile underlay is a heavy-duty 200gsm needle-punched polypropylene fabric — the same professional specification used in commercial reservoir lining, landscape drainage, and civil engineering projects. It acts as a cushion between the ground and your pond liner, absorbing the shock of stones, roots, and ground movement that would otherwise puncture or stress your investment over time.

5 Reasons Underlay Is Essential
- 🛡️ Stone Puncture Protection — Even carefully prepared ground contains sharp stones that can work upward through soil movement. Underlay provides a tough buffer preventing these from reaching your liner
- 🌱 Root Penetration Barrier — Aquatic plant roots can penetrate most liner materials over time. 200gsm geotextile significantly reduces this risk
- 🌡️ Thermal Insulation — Provides a layer of insulation beneath the liner, helping maintain more stable water temperatures in winter
- ⚡ Ground Movement Cushioning — Soils expand and contract with moisture changes and frost. Underlay absorbs this movement, preventing it from stressing the liner
- ⏰ Extended Liner Life — Pond liners installed with geotextile underlay last significantly longer than those without. The underlay investment pays for itself many times over
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
- Excavate and clean — Dig your pond and remove all large stones, roots, glass, and sharp debris. The cleaner the substrate, the better
- Roll out the underlay — Starting from one end, roll the underlay fabric into the excavation and press flat against all surfaces
- Overlap at edges — Allow 30–40cm of underlay to extend beyond the pond edge in all directions, protecting the liner at its most vulnerable point
- Overlap joins — If multiple pieces are needed, overlap by at least 300mm. No adhesive needed — the liner weight holds all pieces in position
- Install liner on top — The 0.75mm butyl liner in this kit is installed directly on top of the underlay. The two layers work together to provide optimal protection

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I really need underlay, or can I use sand instead?
A: Sand is a good supplement but not a replacement for geotextile underlay. Sand can be washed away by water movement during pond filling, leaving voids that create pressure points. Use both sand (50mm base layer) AND geotextile underlay for the best protection.
Q: How much underlay do I need?
A: Order the same dimensions as your pond liner. The underlay in this kit is supplied in the same size as the liner, so no extra is needed.
Q: Can underlay be used for other applications?
A: Yes. Our 200gsm geotextile is widely used for weed suppression in garden borders, drainage separation layers in decking and paving projects, and erosion control on slopes.
How Much Liner Do I Need?
Measure the longest length, the widest width and the deepest point of the pond, then for each direction:
Liner length = pond length + (2 x maximum depth) + 0.6m
Liner width = pond width + (2 x maximum depth) + 0.6m
The extra 0.6m gives a 30cm overlap on every edge for anchoring. Round up to the next available size; sizes work either way round.
Example: a 3m x 2m pond, 0.6m deep, needs at least 4.8m x 3.8m, so choose the 5m x 4m size.
