Pond Water Test Kit: pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, GH & KH

Water quality is the foundation of every healthy pond. Without testing you are managing blind, unable to see the chemical imbalances that stress fish long before symptoms appear. This liquid pond water test kit covers the six readings that matter most in a garden or koi pond: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH). It gives up to 200 tests in total across the six parameters, so one kit sees most ponds through a full season of regular checks.

Why It Works

Liquid drop tests, not dip strips

Every test uses reagent from a dropper bottle added to a measured water sample in a small test tube. Dropper bottles keep each drop the same size, which is what makes liquid tests more repeatable than dip strips. You compare the colour of the sample against the chart supplied, or for GH and KH you count the drops it takes for the colour to change.

Built to avoid mistakes

The box doubles as a test-tube rack, and colour-coded stickers are supplied for the tubes and their lids so the same test always goes in the same tube. That avoids cross-contamination, which is the most common reason home test results look odd. Clear picture-led instructions on the box walk you through each test.

Results you can act on

The leaflet gives optimum levels for each parameter and suggestions for correcting them. Results for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are reported as nitrogen (NH3-N, NO2-N and NO3-N), the form used for published safe levels for fish and plants.

In short: six key tests, up to 200 tests combined, liquid reagents with uniform drops, built-in tube rack, colour-coded tubes.

Parameters Tested

  • pH: critical for fish health; the kit reads pH 6 to 9, and most pond fish do best between 7.0 and 8.0.
  • Ammonia: the main fish waste product and toxic at low levels.
  • Nitrite: a by-product of biological filtration and toxic at low concentrations.
  • Nitrate: the end product of the nitrogen cycle; rising levels signal a water change.
  • GH and KH: water hardness and buffering, essential for pH stability.

Where It's Used

Koi ponds, goldfish and wildlife ponds, raised ponds and water features. It is especially useful when commissioning a new pond or filter, after stocking new fish, and whenever fish behave oddly.

Guide Ranges for Pond Fish

Parameter Safe Range (Pond Fish) Action Level
pH 7.0 – 8.0 <6.5 or >9.0
Ammonia 0 ppm >0.25 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm >0.1 ppm
Nitrate <40 ppm >80 ppm
GH (Hardness) 8–12 °dH <5 °dH

These are general guide figures in ionic ppm. Because the kit reports ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as nitrogen, multiply a kit reading by 1.21 (ammonia), 3.29 (nitrite) or 4.43 (nitrate) to compare it with this table, or follow the optimum levels printed in the kit leaflet.

Choosing the Right Option

This kit is sold in one size, so the choice is really between a liquid kit and dip strips. Choose this liquid kit if you want readings you can rely on for decisions such as dosing, feeding or water changes, and if ammonia matters to you; many strip packs leave ammonia out. Dip strips are quicker for a casual check, but drop tests are more repeatable. If you keep koi or a heavily stocked pond, test ammonia and nitrite weekly in the warm months; a lightly stocked wildlife pond may only need monthly checks.

When to Test

Test weekly during the active season (April to October) and monthly in winter, plus after adding new fish, heavy rain or temperature extremes, any chemical treatment, cleaning or replacing filter media, a fish death, or whenever fish gasp, flash or sulk.

Installation, Use & Care

Fill the matching tube with 5 ml of pond water, add the drops shown, cap and mix, then wait the stated time and read against the chart. Rinse tubes in pond or tap water after each test and keep them with their own coloured lids. Test away from the pond and pour used samples down a drain, never back into the pond. Store the kit somewhere cool and dark, out of reach of children, and check the dates on the bottles each season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tests do I get?
Up to 200 tests combined across the six parameters. How long that lasts depends on which tests you run most often.

Is it a strip kit?
No. Every test uses liquid reagent from a dropper bottle into a test tube.

Why does my nitrate reading look lower than the guide table?
The kit reports nitrate as nitrogen. Multiply by 4.43 to convert to ionic ppm.

Can I use it in an aquarium?
The chemistry is the same, but this kit is packaged and charted for pond use.

Customer photo review of Pond Water Test Kit UK | Tests pH, Ammonia, Nitrite & More | Koi & Garden Ponds

Got this for checking up on my tiny balcony pond to keep tabs on water quality before repotting some plants around it, and its been a bit of a game-changer. The kit lets me test crucial factors like ammonia levels so I can avoid any nasty surprises with the fish. After using it routinely through both sunny and typical British soggy weeks, Ive really felt more confident handling my ponds with its help.

Customer photo review of Pond Water Test Kit UK | Tests pH, Ammonia, Nitrite & More | Koi & Garden Ponds

Needed to get on top of the water quality in the ponds as it looked a bit off. The kit is simple right out of the box, which was reassuring considering the stress I went through assembling everything else around them. Managed to monitor pH levels and ammonia with no problems, and so far its helped keep my koi happy swimming under these indoor lights without any unexpected mishaps.
