A pond waterfall spillway turns the water your pump is already moving into a wide, even sheet that falls cleanly into the pond. This brushed stainless steel blade comes in 300, 600 and 900mm widths, with the hose inlet either on the back or underneath, so it can be built into a sleeper wall, set into stonework or fixed to a wall above a formal pool.

If you are building a raised pond or replacing an untidy open hose at the top of a rockery fall, this is the part that gives you a crisp curtain of water instead of a narrow trickle. It connects to any pond pump or filter outlet through its stepped hosetail.

Why it works

A wide curtain from a small hose

Water enters the closed stainless box through the hosetail, fills the body and leaves through a narrow slot onto the front lip. Because the box evens out the pressure along its length, the water spills over the full width as one smooth sheet, creating a natural waterfall effect from an ordinary pump hose.

More oxygen where your fish need it

A broad sheet of falling water breaks the surface across a much wider area than a single outlet pipe, which increases oxygen transfer. That matters for koi, goldfish and the beneficial bacteria in your filter, particularly on warm summer nights when dissolved oxygen naturally drops.

Stainless steel for a clean, modern finish

Brushed stainless steel suits timber sleepers, rendered walls and natural stone alike, and will not crack the way thin plastic weirs can after a few seasons of sun and frost.

Two inlet positions

The back-inlet version takes its hose straight through the wall behind it. The bottom-inlet version takes the hose from underneath, which suits blades sitting on a coping or a shelf with the pipe rising from below.

  • Wide, even sheet of water rather than a trickle
  • Brushed stainless steel; hosetail fits 25, 32 and 38mm hose
  • Back or bottom inlet, in three widths

Where it's used

Raised sleeper and brick ponds, with the blade under the top course pouring into the pool below. Formal rendered pools and courtyard water walls. Rockery waterfalls and streams, set into the header stone so filtered water returns as a sheet. Koi ponds, where the extra surface movement helps keep oxygen levels up.

Choosing the right option

Start with the pump you have, or plan to buy. Each width is matched to a recommended flow: 300mm for pumps of about 3,000 to 4,500 litres per hour, 600mm for 4,500 to 8,000, and 900mm for 12,000 to 22,000. Too little flow on a wide blade gives a patchy curtain. Hose length, lift height and any filter in the line all reduce the flow reaching the blade, so use your pump's flow at that height, not its maximum. If your pump delivers between 8,000 and 12,000 litres per hour at the blade, the 600mm gives a heavier curtain and the 900mm a lighter one; a tap or flow valve in the line lets you fine-tune either.

Then pick the inlet: back inlet when the hose runs through the wall behind the blade (typical for sleeper and block walls), bottom inlet when it comes up from below through a coping or shelf.

Installation, use & care

Position the spillway at the desired height above the pond surface (typically 10 to 30 cm for the best visual effect) and secure it in a sleeper wall, rockery or masonry so the lip is perfectly level along its length; a spirit level is the only specialist tool you need. Push your pump or filter outlet hose onto the hosetail and secure it with a hose clip, then switch on. Wipe the lip and slot occasionally and clear the pump's pre-filter so the curtain stays even.

Frequently asked questions

What pump flow rate do I need?
Match the width to the flow reaching the blade: 3,000 to 4,500 L/h for 300mm, 4,500 to 8,000 L/h for 600mm and 12,000 to 22,000 L/h for 900mm. Higher flow within the range produces a fuller, more dramatic curtain.

Will it work with my existing pond pump?
Yes, provided you can run 25mm, 32mm or 38mm hose from the pump or filter outlet to the blade. The stepped hosetail accepts all three sizes.

Does it help with filtration?
The spillway itself is not a filter, but many pond keepers connect their external filter's outlet directly to the spillway inlet, so filtered water re-enters the pond via the waterfall, which is highly effective.

Is it suitable for a koi pond?
Yes. Koi need well-oxygenated water, and the surface agitation from a wide waterfall is one of the best natural ways to achieve it, reducing reliance on air pumps.

Will it freeze in winter?
We recommend switching off the waterfall during frost and freezing temperatures to prevent ice damage to the pump and pipework. Use a pond heater or de-icer instead to keep an ice-free area at the surface.
