This solar pond fountain pump kit puts moving water into a pond, water feature or bird bath without a single metre of mains cable or a penny on your electricity bill. Choose from five sizes, from a 160 L/h starter pump to a 900 L/h pump driven by a 10W solar panel, plus a floating fountain for bowls and bird baths.

It suits anyone who wants the sparkle and sound of a fountain where running power to the garden is impractical: wildlife ponds, small fish ponds, patio features and rented or holiday properties. Each pump runs directly from its solar panel, so it starts when the sun shines on the panel and stops when it does not. There is no battery, and no running cost.

Why it works

Direct solar drive, nothing to wire

The panel feeds the pump through a 5 metre cable on the submersible models, so the panel can sit in the sunniest spot while the pump sits in the water. There is no transformer, no electrician and no permanent installation; you place the panel, drop the pump in and it is working.

Moving water for fish and wildlife

A fountain breaks the surface and adds oxygen, which helps prevent stagnation and keeps the water fresher for fish, frogs and the insects that visit a wildlife pond. Birds are drawn to the sound and movement of falling water.

Sized to the job

The smaller pumps throw a gentle spray of 35 to 65 cm for small ponds and features. The 900 L/h pump, with its larger 10W panel, throws a fountain up to 1.5 metres in direct sun for a bigger pond.

Choosing the right option

Match the size to the water. For a bird bath or bowl, the 180 L/h Floating model simply sits on the surface, with bumpers to keep it central. For a container, trough or very small pond, the 160 L/h gives a gentle bubble and spray. For a small wildlife or patio pond, the 250 or 300 L/h kits give a fuller fountain of around 60 cm. For a larger garden pond, or wherever you want a fountain that reads from across the garden, choose the 900 L/h with its 10W panel. Bear in mind that every model needs direct sun on the panel: in shade or under cloud the spray drops or stops, and as the sun moves round the garden you may need to re-angle the panel.

Installation, use & care

Position the solar panel in the sunniest available spot, ideally facing south and angled at 30 to 45°. Place the pump in the pond so it is fully submerged, raising it on a brick or stone if the fountain head sits too low. Connect the pump to the panel and it starts automatically in sunlight. Never run the pump dry, and do not lift it by the cable. Clean the pump inlet filter every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain flow, and wipe the panel with a soft cloth.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work on cloudy days?
These are direct solar pumps with no battery, so they run when sunlight reaches the panel. Expect the best performance from April to September; on overcast days operation is intermittent.

Does it need mains electricity?
No. The panel powers the pump directly, so there is no wiring, no electrician and nothing to plug in.

Is it safe for fish?
Yes. It runs on low-voltage DC straight from the panel, and the spray adds oxygen as it breaks the surface.

Which size for a wildlife pond?
For most small wildlife ponds the 160 to 300 L/h kits give a gentle spray in keeping with a natural pond. Choose the 900 L/h for a larger pond or a taller fountain.
